First of all - hi, everyone! Glad to be back in a group conversation, especially since the Classical Singer Magazine's website Forum was shut down permanently today. I feel less isolated (some psychologist ought to study the effects of crashing websites on users).
When I was in high school (in a predominately white area), we did "Wiz" with a rainbow cast. Auntie Em was black, Dorothy was white (a girl with an enormous belt voice), I understudied Dorothy while being in the chorus (I'm white), Tin Man white, Lion and Scarecrow black, the witches white, the chorus total rainbow. No one said "boo" about it, either in the community or in the school; in fact, we had a great turnout, and wound up flying to England that summer to perform the production for 3-4 "sister" schools. The English kids just ate it up like ice cream.
Interesting how the other school in Albany reacted to "non-traditional" casting. I wonder if the protesters were more interested in the sound of their own protesting, rather than the welfare of the performing students. Any more comments on "non-traditional" outcries?
Best regards to all, Teressa Ann McKillop / L.A. Soprano
