Hi Jocelyn and everyone -
Yes, I did make it to see the Ruth Ann Swenson master class! First, she is
so funny and sweet and down to earth!! From her photos, I was expecting this
serene, slender, swan-like creature to emerge onto the stage, and then, this
cute, chunky, totally down-home New York girl comes bouncing onto the stage
with a huge smile on her face!
She had a really nice rapport with the students, and it was great to see
some of them improve markedly in that small half hour space of time. Most
of the students sang coloratura arias, appropriately, and she was really fun
and sweet about getting the improvements out of them she was looking for.
She seemed nervous at first about the one male student who participated, but
she seemed to feel more comfortable by touching him a lot and then when he
said how excited he was to hug her, that broke the ice and she joked about
how "that's all men want." After that it was even more fun and jovial, and
she was just impressive all around.
I can't really say she gave any amazing insights or great wisdom about
singing - mostly just stuff anybody on this list might talk about or remark
upon - but she was able to zero in on problems in people's techniques and
draw out an almost immediate response. It was great to see.
I also saw Susan Graham give a recital last weekend, if anyone is interested
in hearing about that, let me know!
