I have found in the past year that I have become increasingly successful in "snapping into" character as I walk into an audition. In such a situation, self-affirmations don't seem to be necessary, because I'm not really me when I sing, but the persona I've assumed.
I wonder whether affirmations couldn't also be somewhat counterproductive, only in that they make us even more self-aware - not in the good sense - than we would normally be if we just concentrated on the music and drama to be performed.
I also just came back from an audition this afternoon in which the most delightful thing happened: my normal last-second adrenalin surge decided, for some reason, to happen 30 minutes before I actually sang. So by the time my name was called, I was absolutely calm and focussed again.
I'm hoping this is the start of a trend.
