| Last week I attended a Master Class conducted by Birgit Nilsson. 82 years old she is still going strong. "I am always in good shape" she said with her good sense of humour. And a lot of humour she has and she is quick-witted as well. She taught six students at the Royal College of Music here in Stockholm. During the singing of each student I took notes on what was lacking regarding their singing and to my surprise Mrs Nilsson and I agreed on several things. Almost all of the singers lacked focus, good support and a good articulation/diction.
Mrs Nilsson emphasized the importance of good breathing support as the cause and foundation for good singing. She gave a demonstration of how she was supporting her voice. No pushing out of the abdomen. More of "pushing in" so to speak. The higher you sing the lower you must support was her message. No tension in the chest and the diaphragm. She also emphasized the importance of focusing the voice in the head and to let the head-voice dominate the whole voice compass. For me it was a very rewarding experience and a confirmation that I was doing right.
