Tako, The Eulenberg score of the St. John Passion has the choral basses mostly in a normal range, the very lowest note being the final Eb, though who knows what the actual pitch was. Since the organ is included in the score this may have been 'only' a flattish F, or something. Also, despite Jesus' lower tessitura in John vs. Matt., his only really low notes are on unstressed syllables, lightly accompanied and rather scarce, hardly rock solid. john At 02:51 PM 6/14/00 -0700, you wrote: >I wrote: >> (requires a rock solid low F) > >btw, if you assume A=415, this starts edging toward a modern Eb! > >A D2 (some mandatory for voice leading purposes, if I remember >correctly) at the end of one chorale creeps down almost to C2!!! > >-Tako > > >------------------------------------------------------------------------ >Get a NextCard Visa, in 30 seconds! >1.
