Well, first of all it sounds like there is a psychogenic voice disorder involved (possibly puberphonia) and she may need counseling from a qualified slp or psychologist. As far as SLS and this goes, there are some devices used that stimulate chest lots of /ae/ using a rather nasty, aggressive sound. However, this may not work because the student may be too hung up to comply.
