I presented my Voice instructor a list of songs i would like to learn. I am no Leontyne Prince or Kattleen battle, and I know my race is (although i agree should not be) a factor in Opera roles. But i did not take that into condideration when I was compiling my list, She me to look more into roles that would be more appropriate for me to sing. All the Arias I picked were in the same light lyric soprano category. I didn't have to think long into what she meant. To concentrate more on what i would actually be cast in as a young African-American female. I know all about "equal opportunity" but I also know there are "Traditional" roles which might not be as willing to consider me. The 1960's were not the end of all problems for those in the Opera industry.
I wasn't trying to make any kind of statement or arguments, I was just trying to find some suitable arias and explain the circumstances behind it.
I am feeling a little hostility from what i assumed was an innocent answer on my part. Is this what happens when someone disagress with someone on this list?
I am also sorry if my post was confusing. My "logic" was not to learn obscure arias for audition purposes but for my recitals. I would like to add many more arias to my rep. but to know which I would be more likely to be cast in.
