Karen,
Figure out exactly what vowel you are using in the Verdi (not what you
think you're using - it's usually different). Try substituting that
for whatever vowel you've been using in the "la" for the Bizet.
Also try singing the Bizet line extremely legato - if that makes a
difference, then you're probably not maintaining a legato breath
through your coloratura.
Another weird trick I sometimes find helpful is to close my mouth a
little on a top B or C. I don't know why it works, but it does.
