I've always treated G&S as opera... and have sung that aria and played that
role. One word of caution - the 2nd verse is usually cut because it is a
commentary on the fire chief of London at the time, who was quite a Lothario.
To avoid it being cut in the show, I had to rewrite the verse - which I did,
spoofing the then-governor of Maryland. It got a great laugh!! So if you
can write a clever parody for the 2nd verse that would work, it might be a
fun thing to do for the audition...
