Hi Karen,
I have found that if I think about one or some of the following, it helps:
- maintaining a beautiful, relaxed vibrato
- pretend at the beginning of the phrase that you have another measure of
the note to sing
- think about what you are saying more than what you are singing
- In this aria in particular, I take a bit of a break and then a large
breath after scorta (as is written, but I really take my time)
- Also in this aria, I worked to sing four bar phrases starting at the
Sostenuto - then the last il mio amor doesn't seem so long
- Continue allowing your abdominal muscles to pull in during the entire last
phrase until after you release the note
- Imagery also works for me - so I like to think of my sound going all the
way into the sunset
- walk the phrase. Set a particular path and concentrate on getting to the
final point about a beat after the phrase ends.

I know I'm telling you stuff you've probably already done or tried, but
maybe there's something new.

Good luck!

I know it's mostly mind-over-matter, but does anyone have some good advice
on how to sustain high notes, especially those at the ends of phrases.
For some reason, it seems like every aria I'm working on these days
requires me to hover on a high F, G, or A for at least 2 measures. I've
already given up actually appending the final consonants in an effort to
keep the vowel open and the palate raised. But even so, and even being
careful to breathe with the end of the phrase in mind, I'm still not
consistently able to "make it" through the entire duration of the note.
I'm having particular problems with the final F (right on my upper break)
at the end of "Acerba volutta" from ADRIANA LECOUVREUR - I have to hold it
3 measures plus an eighth note, and it's all I can do to keep from turning
*blue*!

Any tricks, hints, self-psyches, or other advice would be very helpful.
