This Friday, June 15, 2001, the masterclasses offered as part of the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition will be offered in streaming video over the internet, the first from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm BST (6:00 am to 8:00 am EDT in the States) and the second from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm BST (10:00 am to 12 noon EDT in the States.) Master teachers are sopranos Barbara Bonney and Gundula Janowitz, mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne and baritone Tom Krause.
Check out some of the fine singers involved in this great competition (past winners have been Karita Mattila, Inger Dam-Jensen, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Bryn Terfel, Katarina Karneus, Paul Whelan and Christopher Maltman): each singer is represented by one selection on the Cardiff competition website. Besides the winners from the first three nights of competition, tenor Marius Brenciu (Romania), mezzo Elina Garanca (Latvia) and soprano Andion Fernandez (Phillipines) , check out mezzo Stephanie Novacek (USA), soprano Maryna Vyskvorkina (Ukraine), and baritone Vladimir Moroz (Belarus). While last night's competition winner has not been announced on the web, I'd vote for either mezzo Ekaterina Semenchuk (Russia) or soprano Natalie Christie (Australia). The singers from the Kirov Academy have really taken the competition by storm!
