No, John, that was never the accepted practice to quote at length. Marko used to suggest that we paraphrase, be as brief as possible, using only as much quote or indirect quote as was needed to establish what the thread or query was for anyone who had not seen the post being responded to.
Some e-mail software quotes an entire message automatically when one pushes the reply button. Any and all of it can be deleted, however. I would like to join you in suggesting that the practice of quoting entire messages be stopped.
