> Which leads me to another point. The days of learning four or five > roles and having a career are GONE! One of my teachers at Indiana > told us that he could have had a career just singing Manrico, > Cavaradossi, Rodolfo, and Canio. Look at the schedules of the opera > companies. Oh, yes, they still do Trovatore, Tosca, Boheme, and > Pagliacci, but they are also doing Streetcar named Desire, A View > form the Bridge, Cold Sassy Tree, Emmeline, you get the point.
And when we have such a high-profile example as Placido Domingo proving that it is physically possible to learn (throughout a career) and perform over 100 roles AND become the world's leading opera singer - well, I fear that such an example makes it impossible for other singers to build careers that are too much less prodigious.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with continually learning new roles- I like the idea of continually learning music- I'd hate to be stuck with four roles for the rest of my life- Even though the four roles you mentioned are the ones that I would most like to sing! apart from rodolfo- I'd explode if i had to sing that. Manrico and Cavaradossi however...that's my cup of tea. Maybe a Turridu here and there as well....
