Wasn't Strepponi rather far along in her career before she even met Verdi? I
seem to recall that she was a well established diva with enough clout to
champion the operas of a young, almost unknown composer. Before Nabucco,
Verdi had not composed a truly successful opera. Check out how often Un
Giorno di Regno (or whatever it's called) gets performed, there's a reason
why.

Anyway, that's not my point. I believe that Strepponi's voice may have aged
for a variety of reasons--including lots of use in a very successful
career--not just singing Abigaille.
