Hi Danielle:
I can tell you that reflux (the acid problem you asked about)can really do damage in a bunch of different ways. One is that it's insidious - many of the symptoms are easy to ignore, seem like allergy symptoms or stress reactions, etc. Another is that the effects on your voice are very stress-making. Since the birth of my second child, I found my voice to be really inconsistent, effortless one day, unpredictable the next. I had occasional episodes of what I called "disappearing note-itis". I'd be singing along merrily and then one note would simply not come out. The next in the series would be fine. It made no difference whether it was a high or low note. I told myself it was a cold coming on, or allergies that were swelling me up. My really good, warm lower register vanished and was replaced by an extra octave of whistle on top. And I really mis-attributed it all to things like the stress of motherhood, having a husband who put in "his 8 hours" and was done, teaching all night long after being Mommy all day, dust-mite allergies - you name it. I accepted it as my lot for putting motherhood first. No sleep, stress, no time or energy for my own singing after I'm through teaching. etc. It was very frustrating.
Then I went to the doctor about having trobule swallowing and she diagnosed me with reflux, said I had significant burns and gave me Prilosec. Within 2 weeks those symptoms started to resolve. Now, after a month, my low notes are back, I don't wake up with a throat full of phlegm, I don't have to constantly fight the urge to clear my throat and I'm not exhausted after an hour of singing or teaching. I still need to manage my stress better, but the bulk of the annoying problems are hugely reduced.
So I guess my answer is yes, acid can ruin your voice, but treated and amnaged well, it's not necessarily irreversible.

-----Original Message----- From: DANIaka007@a... Hi everyone... I was wondering if anyone can tell about that acid or something that burns your throat or something, and if that really DOES ruin your voice. Is there anything else that can possibly ruin your voice?
