The "USDAN Center for the Creative and Performing Arts" is a day camp located in Wyandanch, Long island. (About 50 minute drive from NYC) Kids as young as 7 - and ranging up to 17-18 years old go there and take a "major" and a "minor" - the major can be anything from an instrument to drama to ballet to jewelry making to video film making, etc! Then there are "minors" - with the same range of topics. The difference - the major is for 2 hours during the day, while the minor is one hour. If you take an instrument, usually you have one hour of group instruction in the specific instrument, and one hour of, say orchestra. The drama department has voice (speech) movement, improv and scene study - one hour each. I studied chorus, drama, guitar, and ballet over the years I went there. There's also one hour of "recreation" - and - the best - 20 minutes of "assembly". This is a show - every day - with professional guest artists. When I was there, they ranged from the Tokyo String Quartet to Harry Chapin. The grounds are beautiful..... I reccomend that anyone living on Long Island or even Queens with a love of the arts to check this place out.
