laura, i have no real idea what either of you picture in your mind, but... as i understand things to be- when you hold your breath, your vocal folds close. when you exhale, your vocal folds ('here's the church, here's the steeple...) open. if you use an unvoiced gargle, your vocal folds are open and it is the exhaled air that keeps the water out of your lungs. if you use a voiced gargle, your vocal folds are closed and only open according to the principles of the bernouli effect. i hope this information will be helpful to you in your quest for your personal best gargle.
