Steven asked about IPA sound samples and ASCII Equivalents online. Here are some places to start:
The Diction Domain's IPA ASCII Equivalents Page--a guide created specifically for singers. http://www.la.unm.edu:8001/~magner/DDipaeqiv2.html . We haven't got sound files there yet (what *do* we do with our spare time?;-)) but we've included sample words in an easy-to-read table format that shows regular IPA and the ASCII Equivalents side-by-side. ASCII Equivalents take a little time to get used to, but they're incredibly useful for discussing or using IPA in any environment (especially email and newsgroups) that doesn't always allow use of special fonts.
Online phonetics course, includes sound files of IPA. http://www.unil.ch/ling/phonetique/api2-eng.html
Sounds of French. Good sound files, page can take a while to load. http://virga.org/cvf/index.html (Page in French, no English translation.)
More IPA-related references can be found at the Diction Domain, http://www.diction.vocalist.org. Look under "Language Resources" and then choose "IPA Resources" from the menu.
