My physics of music textbook, The Science of Sound by Thomas D. Rossing, has a small section on vibrato. There are some interesting references in it, including one to a study that was done on Maria Callas and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Winckel, F., 1975, "Measurements of the Acoustic Effectiveness and Quality of Trained Singers' Voices," 90th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, San Francisco).
You might want to take a look in the index of your textbook to see if there is any mention of vibrato. And if your teacher thinks it is all artificial, perhaps you could suggest he listen to any recording of an opera singer - they all got it!
