Andrew,
You have all your own answers! You know you need to quit.. and you know that the side effects of quitting are going to be that you need to adjust to having the extra moisture that the cigarettes are currently drying out.
You should discuss this with your teacher. Your teacher should be able to tell you all of the ways in which you might be getting a good result this way, but you'll get a far better result (after getting used to the change) after quitting. Your teacher is the key, because she knows your voice and has the technical knowlege to speak to the physiological changes (for the better!) that will take place.
I used to be a light smoker, too, so I know some of what you're going through. What really keeps me from ever lighting up now is that my voice can do things that it never could when I was smoking. That and the fact that I refuse to be a pawn for the murderous, slimy, disgusting snake-oil tobacco industry. They ain't getting one more penny from me for their death sticks.
Carol S. Used to think she looked so COOL with a cigarette.. so Lauren Bacall... HA!
