Hello again. I love vacation and all the things I can do, like read for FUN! I'm nearly caught up with my vocalist digests, getting close to December 20 now.
I recently auditioned for SFO chorus. It would have been an ideal job, being just across the bay from San Francisco. I do so love a gorgeous sound, raw emotions and a pretty costume!
This was my third audition for them, so I was not very nervous at all; a nice change. My technique is quite solid compared to years past, BUT I had just gotten over about three weeks of laryngitis/coughing/lung infection. Plus the weather is so strangely dry, that I seem to need gallons of water to keep my juices flowing. Anyway, my voice got a little stuck, beginning with [P (click)--ordZi - amor]. It felt like my cords wouldn't open at onset. Argh. (Porgi Amor)
My next piece was chosen by my teacher, and Ian Robertson was not familiar with it. The accompanist hadn't played it in ten years. We were not together, I had to stop and find a place we would be together. Embarassing.
The good news: My rejection letter included the line that I would be kept on the audition list for the following year. I guess I impressed them enough not to be kicked out on my ear.
Anyway, thanks for "listening." It's nice to be able to share things with those who understand.
Also, I was shocked and pleased when I recieved an A in my graduate bibliography class. I have many of you to thank. I had been reading everything I possibly could about falsetto, head voice, chest voice, and the confusion of terms, and wrote a paper entitled, "Passaggio." I hope you don't mind, Dr. Lloyd, but I used two of your long explanations in my paper, with grand use of footnotes, of course. Thank you for your up-to-the-minute information. I was literally crowing all over the house when my grades came in the mail yesterday!
Anyway, Mele kaliki maka, as they say in Hawaii, and here on the lovely island of Alameda, in California.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
Jocelyn Thulin, soprano
