Sharon was referring to the Singer's Musical Theatre Anthologies in this
quote. The other thing that I really like about this series is that the
arrangements are taken straight from the piano-vocal score. A lot of other
anthologies re-arrange the songs and usually make them easier for the pianist
and they're usually not as interesting. I like this series and use it a lot.
Most of my students are female and high school age, and I recommend that
those who are interested in musical theatre should have both soprano and alto
volumes, and I'll select songs from both based on the individual voice.
Fach just isn't as much of a concept in musical theatre as physical type
is. Although I can sing all but a couple of soprano musical theatre roles
(no Marias or Marians for me, thank you), nobody's going to hire a large 44
year old woman to play a romantic lead. So bring on all those Rodgers and
Hammerstein matronly mezzo roles!
