In WordPerfect for Windows, which I much prefer (even though mine is version 6.0 and I can't upgrade till I get a new PC), I just type Ctrl-W and I get a screen and I can either select the appropriate symbol or I can type "a" and "~" if I want to get the "a" with a "~" over it... same thing for umlauts, accents, etc.
