Chris, I sat playing the clarinet for many years, and the only way I found to keep the breathing correct, was to sit on the very edge of the chair, thereby lowering your legs, and flattening out the stomach area.
You need to be very aware of how you breathe, and be conscious of what you're doing while sitting. My husband, Marcelo, a clarinetist, of course sits much of the time he plays, and his breathing tends to creep up into the midriff area. I will usually spot it and can correct it in time, at least!
