If you want a non-expert answer rather than none (after all it is holiday-time): Nodes are mostly something like callus on your hands, the result of giving your vocal cords a hard time (which you should not, obviously). As far as I know there can also be other causes, but they are quite seldom seen. The nodes will make it impossible for your cords to close completely (result: hoarseness, at least a less clear tone, especially with higher notes), which can be a reason to put them under even more stress etc.
Mostly they can be cured by vocal rest, but they are always a reason to see an ENT or laryngolist at once. So that's what I would do if in doubt. If vocal silence does not help, they can be removed operatically, which seems to be the choice for the lesser evil.
They are quite often seen with a special type of children, that think their voice is intended to scream as often and as loud as possible. Some grown ups seem to behave equally and can get nodes for this reason as well. People that use their voice a lot, like teachers and singers, are more easily prone to get them than others, and can get nodes for other reasons than the above mentioned children.
When visiting an ENT with and for my daughter two years ago, I heard the ENT talk to a woman that had nodes and who got the advice to remain silent for a week, whereupon the woman answered: you see docter, that is my problem: I just have to talk.
Best greetings, Dre
