Dear Cindy, I didn't realize that my linguistic style, simple as it is, could elicit a strong reaction from you. And you want me to change it? Thank you, anyhow, as this allows me to properly introduce myself - something I desisted from doing (except for a very little portion of my multifarious professional pursuits) -- lest I come on too strong. After a total of 20 years of vocal study, 15 years of experience as a professional singer and speaker - I speak in various professional conventions, corporate functions, and lecture in personal development and management seminars ( I am a management consultant, too.) that I myself authored, and until recently was anchoring a radio program on information technology. I've been doing all these alongside my practice of voice therapy and rehabilitation- which I pioneered in my country in 1997 after many years of research and study of the nature, causes, diagnosis and management of voice disorders and after six years of attendance in the annual convention of the Philippine Society of Otolarygology-Head and Neck Surgery where I have also had the honor of presenting scientific papers a number of times. From then until the present time, I continue to attend post-graduate courses in otolaryngology and speak before various medical bodies on my five-pronged wholistic approach. My practice is concentrated on physiopathology secondary to the hyperfunction and the hypofunction of the laryngeal mechanism. As such, I have worked on hundreds of patients that include broadcasters, recording artists, business executives and educators with 95% of these referred by at least 35 top ENT specialists who check on the patients' progress mid-therapy and at the end of my prescribed therapy period. Of record are many cases of successful (non-surgical) removal of laryngeal nodules, a phenomenal recovery of a patient from Reinke's edema in two months (Most doctors know it takes some two years to cure this with combined voice therapy and pharmacological intervention.), hypernasality concomitant to myesthinia gravis, etc. ON ALLERGIES and NEGATIVITY When I talked about the relationship between negative behaviour and allergies, I wasn't drawing solely from my own experience as a scientific mind is not wont to do. I take off from principles of PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOGY or, in simple terms, the effect of the mind and the emotions on nerological function and the immune system. Any doctor who has read enough on this will agree with me. ATTITUDINAL CHANGE plays a big role in vocal behaviour modification. In his book VOICE AND VOICE THERAPY Dr. Daniel Boone, one of America's foremost voice doctors says that 70% of voice patients have inter-personal relationship problems. This, I can attest to. You can also check Dr. Sataloff's book on this. ON NUTRITION I took up a short nutrition course - with focus on vitamins and minerals and their synergy- and use dietary intervention as part of my program. You will, perhaps, agree with me that a person's linguistic style is part of his personality which is, in turn, moulded by his education and experiences, among other things. It is my hope that henceforth you will not mind my "authoritative" style of expressing my views, in the same way that I don't mind the authoritative style of Dr. Clark. Very sincerely yours, JOSCEPHINE Cynthia Donnell wrote:Dear Joscephine, As I read my responses to your posts I realize that I'm reacting to the tone in which you write almost as much as the content. I missed your introduction to the list but I gather from your posts that you have much experience as a professional singer. You've already added much to the list. I appreciate your posts but at the risk of sounding censorious, I ask you to consider recasting your posts to indicate that what you offer is your opinion or your experience rather than fact. Those on the list for a while have come to realize the importance of doing so. You may have noticed that Naomi Gurt Lind, in her response to the allergy post indicated that her post was anecdote rather than fact. We are particularly careful to do this in matters of science and health. We let our list physicians take care of the facts - when available. We have many folks on the list who are new to the world of singing and often take what is in print as fact. I don't mean to be petty or overly critical but you write in a very authoritative voice and because of this I think your posts carry a sense of authority which you may not intend. This may be why Diane Clark snapped at you. That's not her style. Please note that this message is off-list. cordially,Cindy Donnell
