Today's singers need to be able to sing in a variety of styles and venues to maximize their potential. The Today's Singer Workshop focuses on the techniques, stylistic elements and industry knowledge necessary for today's marketplace.
Topics Include:
Vocal Technique - Vocal technique for today's music places different demands on the singer than what most teachers teach. How do singers like Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Bernadette Peters and Michael Jackson make the sounds they do? Speech Level Singing, a technique used by over 100 Grammy winners and numerous leads of Broadway leads. Speech Level Singing efficiently teaches a singer how to bridge the vocal registers using the all-important mix.
Vocal Style- Much of today's music and modern musical theater derives from African-American traditions. The ability to vocally improvise, riff, and create alternate melodies is a hallmark of this style and in invaluable in giving the singer the style necessary to effectively deliver today's music.
Acting the Song- What makes a singer exciting? A good voice is not enough. A thrilling singer is also a thrilling performer who can make you believe every word through his/her delivery of the text and use of his/her body. Learn what it takes to bring a song to life and create charisma as a singer.

Mark Burnell Mark is one of Chicago's leading musical theater coaches and a well-known cabaret performer and accompanist, at such places Davenports, Hotel Allegro, Pops for Champagne, and the House of Blues. He spent nearly two decades as a faculty member of Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, and Roosevelt Universities.
