You miss the point. Even a smallish voice can usually be heard through a wall meters away--probably even Church and Bocelli. It's really not much of a statement for the projecting power of a voice. It's possible that your teacher may--and I repeat MAY--have one of those voices that seems very large close up but does not carry particularly well. Then again, the problem on the CD could also be poor sound engineering. Big voices are not nearly as easy to record as small voices--another reason why Church and Bocelli sound better on recordings than in person.
