I'm not the expert on this, well, actually, yes I am.

Unfortunately there are precious few "primary sources" on ornamention
from before 1800. And what there is, is sometimes difficult to
interpret.

For a beginner at this (which really includes me, too!) I would
recommend finding recordings of people you like and respect and find
out what they do. There are some actual baroque ornaments that even
have names, like "mezzo-circolo" and "tirata" that can be inserted at
different places. Also, the grove dictionary article on "ornaments"
has some information.

I will try to make a bibliography of sources on ornamentation. There
are probably more articles than books.

Good luck, it really is a fun topic and one that is worth the time to
investigate!
