i have to agree with you. i have found, also, that the method many choir directors use to determine female voice type is; the girls/women who sing in their 'speaking' voices are altos and the ones who sing in 'head' voice are sopranos. and certainly, we think of female pop/belting as being more speech-like and female operatic singing as being unspeech-like for roughly the same reason.
