Hi Kate,

You're right - you can get by in Montreal speaking only a little (or none at
all) French, especially if you are thinking of going to McGill. I'm out in
British Columbia and when I graduated from high school I wanted to go to
McGill and I didn't (mostly for financial reasons) and I have always, always
regretted it. The people who I know who have studied there seem to have a
wonderful time, and Quebec is a great place to be for singing in general (i
will be moving to Montreal myself in a few months). It also has a fairly
decent early music vocal program, which also attracted my attention.

U of Toronto is good - I have a good friend there, and one of my previous
voice teachers teaches there, and all report that it is a good place for
music making.

However, I have heard that Western too is good - I have never been there,
but when I was looking at grad schools, that was the one that stuck out to
me as the place to be. Profs I know here say the teachers are dedicated at
Western and the program is very well balanced. I would check it out.

The most important thing is that you get with a good voice teacher -
wherever that may be. A good program is only so good if you are studying
with someone who can help you vocally.

Feel free to email me privately if you have any questions!
