i'll start with the bad finish first. tonight, pbs was doing their fundraiser here in the golden triangle of north carolina. one of the programs they featured was 'helmut lotti, blah, blah, blah' (busch gardens favorite makes it big). i had always wondered who was atop the amway pyramid and i am surprised by his youth.
the day started great. on classic arts showcase, i saw a 1985 clip of the ninety year old mark reizen singing gremin's aria from 'onegin'. even if a few notes were a little shaky, his voice sounded great and very solid. the best thing about it, though, was the absence of any distinction between the person and the character and it wasn't even certain if he was singing of his love for tatyana or his love of music as, they were one in the same. it was just there. it was being, not acting. nothing was in the way.
what a contrast!
