Rita Gardner, who created the role of Luisa Off-Broadway, was an Anna Maria Alberghetti type with a slightly less "legit" style (though certainly the same vocal abilities, to my ear). The role is typical Broadway light belt-with-legit-overtones ingenue. The same singer could, I imagine, manage Lili in CARNIVAL, Lizzie in 110 IN THE SHADE (also by Jones and Schmidt), and Anne in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC - and if more legit-leaning, Johanna in SWEENEY TODD, Christine in PHANTOM, and Cosette in LES MIS.

----- We're sitting in the opera house; We're waiting for the curtain to arise With wonders for our eyes, A feeling of expectancy, A certain kind of ecstasy, Expectancy and ecstasy....Sh's's's.
