Round about here some Finale users have changed to Sibelius, usually with
relief. I remember when Finale was the only serious choice, and ploughing
through the massive manuals to find out how to put in a grace note was a
trek of Himalayan proportions. But it was the only way to get results of
that quality.
I understand that the programme has become a little more like its major
competitors as time has passed, but retains that annoying edit window. With
the deimse of the fast, user-friendly, but slightly buggy (probably a Win
95 problem really) Encore, Finale now has to contend with Sibelius, at
around the same price. No contest, in my view, even although some of the
Sibelius features seem willfully pervesely unlike their standard windows
equivalent, for instance cut and paste.
If I were starting out, I would have to plump for Sibelius though, since
it is so fast and elegant, and seems to require less adjustments to produce
a finished score. john
