Hi to all,

Whether you like it or not, it's quite correct to
ornament Mozart like anything else of that period. If
a conductor or director etc doesn't like it for
instance, then that's fine, but they're going to be
stylistically wrong. Whether it's considered perfect
is a matter of taste I guess (personally lots of
Mozart sounds like music box ditties to me for
instance!!)

The reason it's become sacrosanct to do a Handel on
Mozart is because lots of Handels' da capo ormaments
as used by singersin the past are well documented,
whereas lots of Mozart's are still being discovered.
That said, whether or not they're written down, you
should always be a little original in a da capo aria.
That's half the point of 'em!! Mozart's just like the
rest: nice tunes, but he 'aint no better or worse than
any other 'great' composer I can think of. That sort
of argument drives me barmy!! It's like saying
Schubert (who I agree wrote some lovely songs, no
denying that one) was a genius 'coz he wrote eight in
one day. Probably more to do with ready cash a la
Lloyd Webber!!! Hehehe!

Anyway, singers of the world, ormament all you like!!

All the best,

Ian Voice wrecker to the stars!! (And ormamentor of
Hades!!)
