the idea that 'only women belt' is, i think, related to the discussion we had on whether or not the classical concept of a woman's 'head voice' is the same as falsetto. a general definition of a woman who belts might describe a woman who sings largely in chest voice extending to a mix in the higher range. this is exactly how men sing. (i still fail to see how it could be bad for one yet good for the other.)
just as women are admonished for singing in chest too much, men are admonished for using falsetto. richard miller says it can lead to poor occlusion of the vocal folds. although, he does say it is a good idea for a male teacher to use falsetto in demonstrating in a 'here's how' fashion for a female student (can he really be saying 'imitate for real what i'm only faking'? i think not).
the difference in men singing classically or singing 'belt' material is stylistic only. meaning the differences are in the extreme variation of the same approach not a different approach.
