I recall being told that the vocal cords are actually inflamed (like
Laryngitis) during the voice change .Is that true?

What actually happens, and would this apply in a less dramatic way to some
girls' voices as well?

I have noticed at Eisteddfods that boys wouldn't dream of singing if the
voice break is bad, but girls seem to ignore the change and carry on
singing, often sounding really dreadful. The voices are often breathy and out
of tune.

Also, why is it that boy and girl sopranos often become adult baritones and
mezzos, and boy and girl altos (alti?) become tenors and sopranos? Or is
that too generalized?

A friend of mine was teaching at a boy's school and commented on how you
needed to be a concert-pianist to be able to accommodate instant key changes
of songs, preferably just before an exam, because the developing voices can
be so fickle, one day the range of a tenor, the next day a young baritone.
