I briefly had a student who was an accomplished mathematician but could not
grasp the concept of time signatures. He was singing "Take me out to the
ball game" (his goal was to sing Chinese karaoke in a Chinese restaurant, and
his rep consisted of karaoke videos in Chinese with Chinese subtitles - so I
put him into a book of easy American songs just to get him started on basic
concepts) and I swear to G*d, he could not understand the measures, "One,
two, three strikes out you're out." He just kept running them together
"onetwothree" instead of giving each word one measure of music - I said,
"Look, the formula is established at the beginning of the song - there are
three beats per measure. That means if there is only one word in a measure,
it is likely that it's going to be worth three beats. Just sing the word and
think "2-3" in your head before you proceed to the next one!" He just could
not get it.

On the lighter side, he had no problem doing exercises based on the nasal
continuant [ng] because it was his last name....
