Dear List,

Re. the cockney accent for such characters as Nancy.
Please bare in mind that cockney no longer exists as
it would have done even forty years ago when Oliver
was written.

I have heard it myself, but do not think that the
rubbish you hear in soaps like Eastenders is in any
way accurate.

There is a marvellous clip on video of Julie Andrews
working with an American voice coach on Eliza which is
very enlightening!!

Apart from that, my advice is to watch Shani Wallis in
the film of Oliver. She just about gets it right for a
theatrical performance. It should be remembered also
that real Cockney was absolutely incomprehensible to
most people apart from Cockneys: a sort of
telegraphise!

Probably of no use whatever, just a comment!
