Polyps, no, no way. He could have been talking about varices, which are
dilated blood vessels, that, if they hemorrhage (and what greater risk to
hemorrhage is there than childbirth?), can result in an ugly bruise and
swelling, and, if untreated, over time they can turn into hemorrhagic
polyps, especially if there is voice abuse.

Unfortunately, most doctors never get a very good look at the vocal cords,
kind of like eyewitnesses trying to pick a thug out of a line-up.
