Subject:  Auditions for Opera/Music Theatre

Dear Suzi and Vocalisters:

When auditioning for a role, sing to the role. If you are interested in
being cast you should assume that those hearing you are one tracked and
have a primary objective of casting the show or opera in question.

Have other material with you and ask if you might also sing something that
goes against the role they are seeking to fill if you feel that you have
grown vocally and want them to know this. But always ask within the
context of the role audition for which you were called.

It is always a mistake to assume that conductors, stage directors,
theatre/opera managers etc. have much of a clue about the potentials of
the voices they hear. They have very selective ears and primarily care
only about the show being cast and, if you are lucky, what they are
considering for the next season.

It is allright to ask question about other roles if you detect that they
have the slightest interest in you after you have sung part of your
audition. Properly done, you can come off as an intelligent singer who has
a broad interest in the art.

Suzi, your story is one of legions that are similar. Even so called
"general" auditions are always couched in what show the auditioneers must
most immediately cast. Congrats on being selected and succeeding.
