i was able to get a good sample of dulce pontes (the sample i got of
madredeus was not long enough to say for sure).

i don't consider dulce pontes to sing in an operatic way. there are
things about her singing that are similar, operatic singing is isolated, not
seperate. the way she sings her lower range would be more considered
belting to an operatic sensibility and she does not, above all, try to keep a
constant vowel line. her phonation is slightly pressed, a no-no in opera
but, not necessarily bad in a lot of mediteranean and north african music (as
far as i know). her way of producing her voice is more similar to the way
natacha atlas produces hers than to an opera singer.
