there is no accounting for taste. i do feel that placido domingo is a better vocal technician than bob dylan. if pushed to it, i'm sure domingo could do a better dylan imitation than dylan could do a domingo imitation (although, i bet dylan's german is better). but, i don't think the grammies are awarding performers for craft (they are probably awarding record companies for advertising).
assuming the awards are in part legitimate, i think they are given to a performer based on total effect and not specifically to craft. despite my feelings on the relative vocal merits of the two aforementioned singers, i would much rather listen to bob dylan than domingo. it is not a question of styles either (i would rather listen to thierry dran than domingo). i just find domingo insuferable.
craft is only a method for achieving a result. beautifully constructed but not wanted, deserves no prize. so, if brittany spears, the linda blair of the new millenium, suceeds in moving people most succesfully, she deserves the prize.
