They probably used dry ice, which isn't as irritating.
I was in a production last year where they used fog
for the first time during the actual performance so I
was totally unprepared. Fortunately I was in the
chorus and not a soloist, because I couldn't sing at
all and had to fight to stifle coughs. Nasty, nasty
stuff. It definitely wasn't just 'in my mind'.
