Hi there, It's Billy Purnell, by the way...........as far as the lip bubble, if that is giving you fits of frustration, i.e., numb lips, itchy nose and slobber everywhere..:), try doing tongue trills or "rasberries". And for goodness sake, if those don't want to work, don't beat yourself up over them, move on to a different exercise. The whole point of doing lip trills, bubbles etc., is to allow the lips to act as a "shock absorber" for the air pressure so that the vocal folds themselves can more easily adjust for the pitch changes going on without having to also adjust for excess air pressure. The great thing about that exercise is that it really forces the singer to work towards a balance of air and muscle. Too much air; the lips blow apart, too little air; no bubble, too much extrinsic muscle action; the sound shuts off. However, the thing you want to be most aware of is the ascent and descent through chest, mix, to head etc.....typically the exercise does not allow one to pull their chest voice too high, but it is very easy to take the head voice, or falsetto, much lower than what we would deem appropriate. If you do this, you will hear, and feel, a leak of air or hissing sound added intot he bubble. Basically, you are hearing the loss in the harmonics of the sounds because the folds are not returning to their full length and mass......... Pretty much laymen's terms there, but hopefully the ideas will help. Happy New Year to everyone!!!! Mary Beth Felker
