>Does anyone have any ideas how to best work at relieving stored tension and stiffness in the upper body (specifically, the chest and the shoulders)?
Yes. Move these parts of your body a lot while singing. They won't be able to stay stiff, and your muscles can learn the feeling of singing while being more relaxed. After a time, you will be able to stand still again without the stiffness. (Alternate movement and stillness for a while, too.)
