Dear Isabelle and List, I was one of the polled who put down more than 8 hours, which isn't really TOTALLY true. I'll try to explain. I was vaguely estimating in all my preparation time: when it gets close to performance time or the beginning of rehearsal times, I spend several hours a day writing out words, repeating them over and over again, etc. to memorize. That is the hardest part of singing for me, so I consider it "practice". I was also counting in coachings. Whenever I can afford it, I coach two or three times a week, and in emergency situations (upcoming perfs) every day. And then rehearsals: if you're singing a big role at twice daily four hour rehearsals over a period of four weeks (common here in Germany), even marking whenever possible, that, too, is a certain kind of practice in my book! Okay, if you ONLY count actual vocalises, warm-ups, etc., and not literature work, I guess I would only be at about an hour or two a week. But that's not what you meant, is it? And I most always feel horribly guilty that I don't practice more! As a matter of fact, I should be practicing now...... Regards, Cyndee
