Ernestine Schumann Heink was one of the great contraltos of all time. She
was also a real rags-to-riches tale, and managed to raise a large family
(by two husbands), while rising to stardom at Bayreuth, The Met, and other
international opera houses. Born in German Czechoslovakia, she immigrated
to the U.S. and became a proud American, rallying fervently to the
American cause in World War I.

She was best known for her Erda, her Fides in Meyerbeer's LE PROPHETE,
Waltraud, Azucena, and Fricka. She created the role of Klytemnaestra in
Strauss' ELEKTRA in 1910.

There are links to quite a bit of information on Mrs. Schumann-Heink on my
Favourite Mezzos and Contraltos web page:

Es en balde, majo mio, que sigas hablando
porque hay cosas que contesto yo
siempre cantando:
Tra la la...
Por mas que preguntes tanto:
tra la la...
En mi no causas quebranto
ni yo he de salir de mi canto:
tra la la...
