I have heard that this is a viable career in Europe,
particularly Germany. It's bloody hard to make a
living as a recitalist in America. Fischer-Dieskau
did it, preferring lieder to opera; Thomas Quasthoff
is doing it now (for obvious reasons). Barbara Bonney
prefers lieder to opera, and is now almost exclusively
a recitalist, having gotten her start in opera.
