Subject:  Lessons and Instructor Absences

Hi everyone-since things are pretty slow, I thought I'd pose a
question regarding my lessons and teacher. Here's the skinny-I have
an instructor of very good reputation who largely teaches
professionals or professionals to-be (i.e. vocal majors/opera
majors). I began lessons as an adult and have been studying a little
over a year. Here's my problem-my instructor is a professional opera
singer who currently maintains an active performance schedule. It is
not unusual for him to be out of town/the country for two to three
weeks at a time and unavailable for lessons. I don't have my
technique locked down enough and sometimes feel as though I am
floundering during those periods. It's feels like mini-set backs.
I'm not sure that I could get accepted by another instructor of his
caliber right now. And studying with him, I do feel comfortable
knowing that I am learning solid technique that is healthy and safe
for my voice over the long run. It's just frustrating because of the
periods of absence. I think most of his other students are advanced
enough that it doesn't affect them in the same way. Previously I had
another instructor who was more accessible with more consistent
lessons but from whom I learned far less. Does anyone have any
observations, suggestions or similar experience on how to cope with
the absences?

Thanks much!
Sandra
